How Sit a Spell Fibers Came to Be...

Hey y’all! I’m so glad you found your way to my table, and I’m excited to share a cup of coffee and a conversation with you. So find a seat, and come sit a spell!

For starters, I’m Caroline - the mad hatter behind Sit a Spell Fibers. I’ve been dreaming about starting a yarn dyeing/pattern design business for about five years now, and just recently took the leap of faith to start it.

I learned to knit during a summer visit to a ranch in Recluse, WY. My family had recently moved to the area, and I was very blessed to meet some wonderful friends in Recluse. (Pssst - the lady who taught me to knit is a SUPER TALENTED leatherworker. Her handle on FB is JLN Custom Leatherwork.)

I’ll never forget my first project (I actually still have it). It was a slip stitch pattern baby sweater - the poor thing was twice as wide as it was tall. 😂 Despite the lackluster dimensions of my baby sweater, I felt incredibly accomplished, and I fell in love with knitting. I learned to crochet shortly after learning to knit, and greatly enjoyed that too!

These two crafts have been so important to me, and I’ve found that the simple rhythm of creating something with your hands gives your mind a chance to reflect on what really matters in life. It’s such a pleasure to watch a project come together stitch by stitch and row by row. I think the feeling is akin to how God felt when He created the earth and all that is in it. The Bible says:

“And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. . .”

— Genesis 1:31a, KJV

I know that in the grand design of things, my fiber arts don’t hold a candle to the beauty of Creation, but I truly believe God designed us with the desire to make beautiful things and take joy in working with our hands.

After getting married and moving to Indiana, I formed some dear friendships with fellow knitters/crocheters. I was introduced to indie-dyed yarn in 2017 when I attended the Greencastle Wool Show with some friends. Boy, oh boy, did I fall in love. 😂 The colors were so vibrant, and the yarn was dreamy and soft. I knew right away that this was something that I wanted to learn.

As a Christian, I sometimes wondered whether there was a place for someone like me in the fiber arts community. There were times when I hesitated to step into this world because I wasn't sure my faith and my values would be welcomed. But the longer I prayed about it, the more I felt God nudging me not to retreat because I was afraid of rejection. Matthew 5:16 says:

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

God has been so good to me. He has blessed our family so much, and I want others to experience the same compassion and love that God has given us. If all of us just sit on the side for fear of rejection, who is ever going to be the light?

And that is exactly why I started Sit a Spell Fibers.

My goal is to foster a community where people can rest, enjoy good yarn and good friendship, and learn more about how much God cares for us. I’d love for this venture to turn into your favorite place to go when you want to sit back in the rocker, be encouraged by others, and create something beautiful.
